As part of my involvement with Brighton Rep Theatre I attempted to gain the rights to stage Graham Greene's Brighton Rock.
Along with The Third Man all rights world wide are owned by Studio Canal.
I cant help feeling that this level of ownership and control is unhelpful to the original work. It's a pity these 20th Century Classics cannot be released from too mcuh restriction. Anything we might have done with the play would pose no threat to Studio Canal's plans.
This is just one of a number of rights issues that have come up in my brief producing career It is a major hurdle to be surmounted with established works or adaptations and hard work.
